La Plata CanyonA beautiful and convenient drive along the La Plata River, up a canyon with many waterfalls, through the old mining camp of La Plata City to a spectacular glacial basin. Kennebec Pass, a 11,500-foot-high gap cut through the ridge at the head of the canyon, is quite a sight. The vista across the La Plata Mountains from Indian Trail Ridge, just below the pass, are terrific as well. This drive provides hiking access to the Colorado Trail. Lots of wildflowers during the summer, beautiful colors during the fall (usually mid-October) La Plata Canyon is located approx. 52 miles north of Aztec.
